I throw functional tableware on a kick wheel in a small home studio and am part of a local wood fired kiln collective. I enjoy using found items, as tools or decoration, and am inspired by the Angus landscape as well as time spent in Italy and Lebanon. SIGHTLINES 6TH APRIL - 31ST AUGUST | The Signal Tower was the only means of communicating with the iconic Bell Rock lighthouse and as its name suggests the primary function was to be a tool of visual communication. This exhibition explores ways in which we send and receive messages today using photography/ceramics/recycled plastic/sound and draws on the collections of Angus Council/Alive. Split across all areas of the museum it provides a thought provoking intervention in the museum for the summer season; inviting people to think about the connections between the natural and human world. I am a graduate of Glasgow School Of Art , Honours Degree in Drawing and Painting 1983. I started to work in stained glass as a complement to my painting. I specialising in original, affordable free hanging leaded glass panels in contemporary and traditionally based designs. But also work on commissions, large and small, for individual clients and undertake repair and restoration work. I am influenced by the dominating Angus landscapes and by the tradition of historical stained glass work, translating them into my own contemporary style. The glass has a huge range of possibilities of colour, intensity and texture and this can often dictate the design. Stained glass is experiencing a revival in interest as people realise the value of traditional crafts. Glass panels, however small, are always a point of focus in the home or public environment and respond well to changes in light as the day and seasons progress. Lately I have been exploring narrative pieces that represent People Places and Time. I am lucky enough to be able to work at home and have had a spectacular bespoke studio built for me in my garden

Sarah Rees Lloyd - Bachelor of Arts Degree in Three Dimensional Design - Wood, Metal, Ceramics & Glass. Sarah set up a studio to design and make contemporary functional ceramics. Her work distils organic and geometric forms predominantly found in the moorlands and shorelines of Angus and the sculptural aspects of Mid Century Brutalist architecture. Sarah is influenced by her South Asian heritage, specifically the vibrant colours applied to temple architecture, which have been central in her development of a rich palette of glaze hues to fit and enhance each piece. I throw stoneware clay on a potters wheel. I design the initial form in sketchbooks and finalise the piece on the potters wheel. Each vessel is made and fired in Brechin, Angus, Scotland. I wish to contribute towards reducing the creation of mass produced poor quality goods that increase landfill. Buying handmade pieces from makers reduces waste, due to work being produced to order or in small batches and are fundamentally made to last.

Emma Hart BIG TIME 27 April – 28 October 2023 Thursday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm Emma Hart BIG TIME, a series of radiant ceramic sundials will take up space and take on time this year in the Gardens at Hospitalfield. Hart’s series of sculptures exuberantly reinvent the familiar sundial as a face and nose to provoke reflection of how our bodies, physically and emotionally, experience time and space. Each stoneware ceramic sundial is handmade by Hart and vividly drawn on with bright underglaze graphics and patterns that twist the idea of measuring sunlight and shadows. Each of Hart’s anthropomorphic sundial is under a different time pressure – some taking way too much, whilst others never have enough. Hart’s sundials have been pushed around in clay and pressed and stretched for time. Artists have long enjoyed interpreting these scientific tools that tell the time by the sun; carved into the historic tower above the sculptures, are four sundials crafted to protrude from the 19th century red sandstone structure of Hospitalfield House. Hart gently plays with the history of sculpture by shaping her sundials out of clay platonic forms or building blocks. The half sphere of the dial makes the head, and is topped with a triangle for a nose. This shape is then echoed at the rear of the sculpture, where triangle wedges satisfyingly prop up the timepiece, whilst it all sits on a cuboid plinth.
